Credit counseling for bankruptcy can be free.

The new bankruptcy law requires that people who file for bankrupcty get credit counseling. It also requires that approved providers of the counseling service tell potential clients that the law requires them to provide the service regardless of ability to pay.

Unfortunately many providers do not provide this information to potential clients according to a survey by the National Consumer Law Center and other groups. Only one of seven agencies surveyed told potential clients that the fee could be reduced or waived, depending on their income.
