FTC releases complaint data for 2007

Identity theft of some form or another accounted for 32% of the 819,000 complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission in 2007. Credit card fraud was the most common form of identity theft.

Number ten on the list of most common complaints was Advance-fee loans and Credit Protection Schemes. I have talked about these on this site. As a general rule, NEVER agree to pay someone a fee to get you a loan and NEVER agree to give someone money to “clean up your credit.” There is probably someone out there who actually does what they say they are going to do, but the chances are you will be dealing with someone who takes your money and accomplishes nothing.

If your debt is a problem you cannot overcome by yourself, work with a Consumer Credit Counseling Service or a bankruptcy lawyer.
