Foreclosure prevention scam is easy to fall for

I just got a mailing from a local “Certified Program HR3648 Representative” who wants to help me avoid foreclosure (my house is not in foreclosure and I am not behind in my payments; they are fishing).  The letter explains some of the benefits of a law called HR3648 and tries very hard to make me think that the local  “Certified Program HR3648 Representative” is working for, or with, the government.  They never mention any fees.

It would be easy to think that these people are connected to the government and have some special way of helping you, but if you get to the fine print, you find that “The agent is not associated with the government, and our service is not approved by the government or your lender.  Even if you accept this offer and use our service, your lender may not agree to change your loan.”  But you will probably have to pay for their service regardless.

You should never have to pay for mortgage modification counseling.  There are government licensed counselors all over the country who provide FREE service.   You can find one at this government web site: Making Home Affordable.
