Debt collections complaints: almost 200,000 generated at FTC

We’re not surprised to see that “debt collection” was the second highest source of complaints at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in 2012, a record-setting year for complaints.  Only “identity theft” got more complaints.  Debt collectors are, as we have said many times, NOT to be trusted.  It is best not to deal with them.  Just send them a “Cease and Desist” letter and if you want to pay off the debt, try to deal with the original creditor.

The third category among the top ten sources of complaints was “banks and lenders” (132,340), and number 10 was “credit cards” (51,550).
